Gayatri Mantra : The Universal Mantra....

|| The Gayatri Mantra ||

Still remember the day, it was a beautiful Summer of a Saturday, at the age of 12 years when my father came home early with a black plaque on top of it was a sun embossed in golden colour and below it the most devine mantra of all 'GAYATRI MANTRA' in south it's called 'Gayatri Mantram' embossed in Golden Sanskrit letters, and that's how i got an introduced to Sanskrit.

He chanted this mantra and it felt so good hearing it for the first time as if all the positive vibration was encircling before me, took some time to remember though as it was difficult to start with at first cause Sanskrit is the only language where you find a lot of conjunction in two letters happening in a word. I chanted it as my father pronounced it to me and after reciting it some 10 times memorized it thoroughly.

The greatness of this mantra is that after you memorize this, you shall never forget this Mantra ever in your life, its a challenge!! and be that anyone from any part of the world, he or she shall never forget it.  It stays embedded in your brain forever.

My father further added that Gayatri Mantra is the most powerful mantra than any other mantra so much it is equal to knowing all four Vedas i.e. Rig, Sam, Yajur and the Atharva Veda. At that time i had no idea what Vedas are but later i came to know that Veda is the devine Infinite knowledge composed by the great sages called Maharishi who were capable of having astral vision and of high intellect, composed infinite volumes and series of Mantras and made Vedas.

Maharshi Vedvyas narrating Mahabharata to
Lord Ganapathy
As many millenniums passed by in the Treta Yuga as Vedas got somewhat deconstructed we had a Great Maharshi Vaysa son of Maharshi Parashar and Satyawati who took the task of restructuring it and hence for this enormous task was honored with the Name 'VEDVYAS'. The great Maharshi is also credited for composing the world's longest epic 'THE MAHABHARATA

Later in the Kali Yuga a Great Seer Adi Shakaracharya again restructured Vedas he created Mutts four parts of the nation and dedicated to each Veda with Dwarka (Samveda) in West, Badrinath in North (Atharvaveda), Puri in the east (Rigveda) and finally with Shringeri in the south (Yajurveda) of India.

Since Vedas are huge voluminous that if you have to compile it then each Veda will constitute more that 100 or may be 1000 times the world's biggest library, you might be thinking that i am boasting but that's how vast it was, VEDA means 'Ved Antaha' meaning knowledge with out end, endless knowledge. During the Krita or Satyuga when Vedas were composed it was passed down to the younger generation orally and passed on simultaneously and this process went on for many millenniums, however by around 6 to 7000 B.C when memorizing capability of remembering Vedas  started to decline, it is a Super Genius Maharishi Panini who gave alphabets to Sanskrit language and later other sages and seers like Maharishi Vedvyas documented the Great Vedas.

Prominence of Gayatri Mantra:

To master Vedas you might require a decade or more, what scholars say it that reciting the gayatri mantra is equivalent to Mastering all the four Vedas, such is the great significance our great seers have given to this wonderful mantra. Before doing any auspicious project, job or sacred ritual, Gayatri Mantra has to be chanted for a better begining.

The Vedas say:

To chant the Gayatri Mantra
purifies the chanter.

To listen to the Gayatri Mantra
purifies the listener.

Sanskrit and it's Significance.

Sanskrit is by far world's oldest language. It's the devine mother of almost all language in the world and all Indian languages have Sanskrit as it's base. Sanskrit is the only perfect language in the world and it requires good intellect to master this language.

The one which is introduced or produced in its perfect form is called 'Sanskrit'. The word Sanskrit is formed from “sam + krit” where (sam) prefix means (samyak) ‘entirely’ or ‘wholly’ or ‘perfectly,’ and krit means ‘done.’ Sanskrit was first introduced by Brahma to the Sages of the celestial abodes and it is still the language of the celestial abode, so it is also called the Dev Vani. Since the start of human civilization on the earth, people and the Sages both spoke pure Sanskrit language.

Sanskrit is the only language that can be coded and many mantras in the Vedas and Upanishads require perception guided by your conscience to decode the Mantra to get the actual meaning. There has never been any kind, class or nature of change in the science of Sanskrit grammar as seen in other languages of the world as they passed through one stage to another.

Please understand that all the Hindu legends, story you have learnt as mythology are actually allegories that represents the Cosmos. You have to elevate your intellectual levels to understand this great mantras else you will find it useless as Pathetic British called it Cowherd Verses, but thanks to the German Physicist who understood the significance of these mantras and were capable of decoding it, that after realizing true knowledge they neglected their Bible and Talmud and kept Bhagwad Geeta close to their chest, much so they preferred Cremation over Burial.

Advantages of Learning Sanskrit:

  1. It is a natural language. There is a direct link between the sound and signs; it is phonetic. We write Sanskrit and other Indian languages exactly as we say which means that the writing of Sanskrit language is based on the sound of the spoken form. In other words, Sanskrit has no spelling; there are no silent letters either. In contrast to Sanskrit, you can't read many English words properly.
  2. There aren't many punctuation marks found in Sanskrit (Devanagari) script.
  3. For writing Sanskrit language, any comprehensive alphabet can be used and vice versa.
  4. Thanks to its phonetic scripts, there is an easy-flowing, natural and logical way to proceed while learning this wonderful language or to write any language after that.
  5. To give a contrast example to this, see how difficult it is to learn the spelling-oriented European languages whose silent letters add to the complications.
  6. By a careful examination of the Roman alphabet we can see that some sounds are repeated in it while many sounds are left out.
  7. There is logic in its sound system, and a natural continuity in its word-making as well as sentence-making. Compare this with pronouncing and spelling of the languages of other countries than India.
  8. For example, unless one has visited England, one cannot guess the correct reading of the names / places like Reading, Gloucester, Leicester, Peugeot, Plymouth. .Chaos. in English, follows if not pre-learnt.
  9. Sanskrit sentence structure is flexible. The declensions and the conjugations have a wide range. Hence every student has more freedom in composing sentences in Sanskrit. In contrast to this, every English sentence has to follow syntax (the law of particular order of words).
  10. In Sanskrit, the order of words in a sentence does not matter. Thanks to this flexibility, a Sanskrit sentence may well follow any language the student is familiar with.

Benefits of the Sanskrit knowledge:

  • Since Sanskrit is the oldest language of our planet, your ability to speak it amounts to a unique experience (and perhaps your special status!).
  • Clear in speech, perfect in pronunciation, articulate in conversation, sharp in memory, rapid in thinking, logical in analysis, rational in understanding, accurate in expression and communication, familiarity with a wide variety of concepts, liberal in views and polite in behaviour as well as a quick grasping of other languages and scripts also - are some of the benefits attached to and traditionally proverbial attributed to a Sanskrit scholar.
  • Sanskrit is really the world-language. Its knowledge helps in studying:
a. European things of the past as a lot of technical terms are similar between Sanskrit, Latin, Greek, Hittite etc. in many technical fields like medicine, law, physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and many more.
b. The languages, religion and cultures of the Middle east like Persian, Iranian and Arabic which owe a lot of similarity.
c. Indian things whether religions, philosophy, arts, science (like Ayurveda, Vedic mathematics, Vastu, Tantra, Kriyayoga and other specialisations) which are all the popular subjects in today.s world.
  • A glimpse of ancient world religions, languages, customs, traditions, culture can be easy to get through the glass of Vedic and Sanskrit literature.
  • In this modern age of computers, Sanskrit has one more thing to offer, - adoption of the already computerised contents or the Sutras in many of its technical subjects like Panini's Ashtadhyayi - the text book of grammar. Since both Sanskrit and the computer are having less irregularities, if not perfect, their combination should work marvelously for the benefit of mankind.
  • In short, Sanskrit is the container of all that which is Indian.
  • Like the saying, .England, without Shakespeare is a zero., they quote. In other words, understanding and appreciation of numerous Indian things whether music, dance, arts, rituals, tradition, religions, values, languages, science etc. will be easy for one who knows Sanskrit. The integrity of the Indian elements owe essentially to the Sanskrit language and literature which has the universal impact upon them.
  • You have now access to the most systematized oriental language.
  • You are now in touch with a language which is very natural (euphonic / built on sound factor), rationally developed, systematic in its structure and versatile in its usage even while retaining its purity and uniformity (without any regional vernaculars).
  • Owing to the spiritual contents predominant in its literature, the knowledge of Sanskrit adds many important dimension to our personality.

History of Sanskrit in British Gifted Democratic India

Despite of 6 and a half decades of independence after John Bull British left us with poverty, partition and disunity due to their divide and rule tactics, Sanskrit language was abruptly ignored by the the Government as all political leaders in the Govt. were British stooges, whose masters had told them never to give this language any prominence and if possible promote their foolish language "English". These Kala Angrez who were loyal British dogs obeyed their masters command and thus only few government schools like Kendriya Vidyalya and some regional schools gave prominence to Sanskrit, in majority of the schools over India, it was not even mentioned.

Being from a Metropolitan city of Mumbai and done my schooling at a Christian English School, we were miles away from knowing Sanskrit, learning English education of the State Secondary Board Education, we were kept miles away from knowing this divine language, had we studied Sanskrit, it would have helped us in shaping our carrier in a much better way add to that progress and development of our Nation. However in 1998, BJP's NDA government was in the process of passing a bill to make Sanskrit mandatory in every schools, but the Christian schools all over India strongly objected to this move from the Government and they mad all procedures to stop this from happening.

Click the link and let's hear the dogs out:
Failing the test

Government sensing they will loose majority in Parliament had to drop the bill, it's impact Sanskrit was kept away from our children and with it, the hope of it's revival. They also came with the idea of using Sanskrit as a option as those who wants to learn Sanskrit can be allowed but even this move was strongly objected by Christina Schools, many Padres protested that learning Sanskrit is like learning hindu rituals in a Christian school and that's not allowed. Hello Padres, Sanskrit is a language like Fool's language English or your ancestral language Portugese, French etc.

What every Europeans must know that SANSKRIT IS THE MOTHER OF ALL EUROPEAN LANGUAGE. Germany, France has already admitted the fact and many other nations are in the process of admitting the same, but all languages in India from North to South, East to West has Sanskrit as a Base in their Language. In spite of this the Government of India has declared this great Language as Dead like Latin.

It's so painful that there are many Sanskrit Scholars in India, who have a PHD or a Masters Degree in Sanskrit but no one comes and learn it as there is no employment opportunity in India, however these poor guys get respite from foreign students who come to India and learn Sanskrit.

See this video below:-

If Padres in England has no problems with Sanskrit then why are Padres in India crying 'RAPE' over Sanskrit. Are teachers in England mad that they have introduced Sanskrit. One good thing to note of England is that the Education system has been liberal in introducing all native language in their education curriculum. In Wales the people and students are learning the native language which was dead and now they want to revive it back. SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENING IN THIS CRUEL NATION AT LAST.

GAYATRI MANTRA DETAILED WORD BY WORD MEANING

The Gayatri Mantra consists of twenty-four syllables - three lines of eight syllables each. The first line (Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah) is considered an invocation, and is not technically a part of the original Gayatri Mantra as it appears in the Upanishads. Gayatri is also referred to as a Vedic poetic meter of 24 syllables or any hymn composed in this meter. Hence, there exists a whole family of Gayatri Mantras, which serve as meditative aids to pray for the blessings of a particular personal God.

Aum Bhur Bhuvah Swah,

Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi,
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

भूर्भुव: स्व:
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं ।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि |
धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात् ।।

A basic translation can be given as...

Oh God, the Protector, the basis of all life, Who is self-existent, Who is free from all pains and Whose contact frees the soul from all troubles, Who pervades the Universe and sustains all, the Creator and Energizer of the whole Universe, the Giver of happiness, Who is worthy of acceptance, the most excellent, Who is Pure and the Purifier of all, let us embrace that very God, so that He may direct our mental faculties in the right direction.

The Four Parts of the Gayatri Mantra

1. AUM (ॐ), the Supreme name of God:

The single word AUM (ॐ) (or OM) is known as the Pranava mantra (प्रणव मंत्र) and is perhaps the most significant mantra in Hinduism. It is known as the primary (or seed) or pranava mantra (or bija mantra) because it contains the seed for all other mantras within itself. AUM is also referred to in some texts as the primordial sound. The significance of AUM can be gauged by the fact that the entire Mundakopanisad Upanisad is devoted to its explanation and importance in hindu (or vedic) thought. There are literally hundreds of references to AUM in this Upanisad. One of them, referred to as the pranava mantra, is given below:

प्रणवो धनु: शरो ह्यात्मा ब्रह्म तल्लक्ष्यमुच्यते ।
अप्रमत्तेन वेद्धव्यं शरवत्तन्मयो भवेत् ।।

pranavo dhanu sharo hyaatmaa brahm tallakshya muchyate.
apramatten vedadhavyam sharavattanmayo bhavet..

Meaning:

Take my friend, this bow, this great weapon of Upanisad; place veneration on it as the whetted arrow; stretch it with the thought fixed on the nature of that (brahman); that very imperishable is the target, my friend. Strike it! (Mundakopanisad II.ii.3)
The Sacred Word (AUM) is called the bow, the arrow is the soul and Brahman is its target; He shall be pierced by him whose attention does not swerve. Then he will become one with Him as the arrow becomes one with the target whence it has pierced it. (MU II.ii.4)
That alone is the self; On which are woven the earth, intermediate region and sky, the mind, together with all its breaths. Put away all other words, for AUM is the channel to the immortal Brahman. (MU II.ii.5)
Where the veins come together like spokes (in the space within the heart!), in it resides Brahman, taking birth in many ways. "It is AUM" - meditate thus on this self. Good luck to you, as you cross beyond the darkness. (MU II.ii.6)

BHUR BHUVAH SWAHA (भूर्भुव: स्व:) These three words collectively are known as the "Mahavyahriti". They express the nature of God, and demonstrate his inherent qualities.

2. BHUR (भूर्)
Firstly, the word Bhur implies existence. God is self-existent and independent of all. He is eternal and unchanging. Without beginning and without end, God exists as a continuous, permanent, constant entity. Secondly, the word Bhur also means the Earth, on which we are born and sustained. God is the provider of all, and it is through His divine will that we our blessed with all that we require to maintain us through our lives. The letter Bhur also signifies the Prana, or life (literally, breath). God is That which gives life to all. Whilst He is independent of all, all are dependent on Him. It is God who has given us life, God who maintains us throughout our lives, and God alone who has the ability to take away our life, when He so chooses. The only permanent entity, all others are subject to His own will
3. BHUVAH (भुव:)
Bhuvah describes the absolute Consciousness of God. God is self-Conscious as well as being Conscious of all else, and thus is able to control and govern the Universe. Also, the word Bhuvah relates to God's relationship with the celestial world. It denotes God's greatness - greater than the sky and space, He is boundless and unlimited. Finally, Bhuvah is also indicative of God's role as the remover of all pain and sufferings (Apaana). We see pain and sorrow all around us. However, through supplication to God, we can be freed from that pain and hardship. God Himself is devoid of any pain. Though He is Conscious of all, and is thus aware of pain, it does not affect Him. It is our own ignorance that makes us susceptible to the effects of Maya, or illusion, which causes us to feel pain. Through true devotion to God, we can be freed from the clutches of Maya, and thus be rid of pain and sorrow.
4. SWAHA (स्व:)
Swaha indicates the all-pervading nature of God. He is omnipresent and pervades the entire multi-formed Universe. Without Form Himself, He is able to manifest Himself through the medium of the physical world, and is thus present in each and every physical entity. In this way, God is able to interact with the Universe created by Him, and thus sustain and control it, ensuring its smooth and proper running and function.
Also, Swaha symbolizes God's bliss. All but God experience pain, suffering and sorrow. Devoid of all such things, God alone is able to experience supreme bliss. Happiness as experienced by humans is temporary, a transient state of mental satisfaction, which soon dissolves back into the mire of worldly troubles. God alone experiences true bliss, permanent and unaffected by worldly pains and woes. One who realizes God is able to join in this bliss, and thus God is able to impart true happiness to those who establish oneness with that Supreme Divinity.

TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM (तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं)

5. TAT (तत् )
TAT means "that", being used in Sanskrit to denote the third person. It is also mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita by Sri Krishna Himself, where He implies the selfless nature of the word. Being used in the third person, the word has implicit in it an idea of selflessness. Sri Krishna uses it to imply the selfless nature of charity (charity, or a gift, being used as an analogy for worship, in the form of action, implying that action should be preformed without regard to its fruits, but simply out of devotion and sense of duty, or Dharma). Tat then is used here in the Gayatri Mantra to indicate that the worshipper is referring to [that] God, and that the praise being offered to God in the prayer is purely directed towards Him, without thought of gaining any personal benefit from that praise.
6. SA-VI-TUR (सवितुर्)
Savita, from which Savitur is derived, is another name of God, this being the reason that the Gayatri Mantra is often known as the Savitri Mantra. The implication of Savita is of God's status as the fountain, the source of all things. It is through His Divine Grace that the Universe exists, and so this word sums up the Mahavyahriti, by describing God's ability to create the Universe and sustain it, as well as, at the right time, bring about its dissolution.
Savita is also indicative of God's gift to mankind. Humans also have, in limited amount, the power, or shakti, of Savita. This shakti acts as an impetus in humans, and brings about the requirement for them to do something. They cannot sit idle, and are constantly searching for something to do. It is through this shakti that mankind has created art, and many other advances in the field of Maths, Astronomy, Medicine etc. Savita gives creatures the ability to procreate, hence, Savita can be thought of as Mother also.
The power of Savita enables mankind to distinguish right from wrong, and vice from virtue. Through this ability, we are able to in some part direct our own selves, and thus, Savita imparts to us a certain self-guiding ability. Thus, by using this word in the mantra, we demonstrate that we are making efforts ourselves also, since God will not help us unless we are willing to help ourselves.

7. VA-RE-NY-AM (वरेण्यं)
Varenyam signifies our acceptance of God, and can be translated as meaning "Who is worthy". God however when realized and achieved, has the ability to truly satisfy. We therefore accept Him as the Highest reality, and it is to Him that we dedicate our efforts.
Varenyam can also be interpreted as signifying one who is eligible. We have chosen Him to be our Leader and our Guide. We place ourselves into His hands, and accept Him regardless of anything else. We place no conditions on this acceptance and  it is all out of our sheer devotion.
BHARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI (भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि)

This triplet is a further description of the attributes and qualities of God - His functional and instrumental qualities, rather than intrinsic qualities - and his relationship with us through these qualities.

8. BHAR-GO (भर्गो)
Bhargo is taken to signify the Glorious Light that is God's love and power, which is equivalent to a 1000 splendid Suns that indicates complete purity. God also has the ability to purify those that come into contact with Him. Bhargo destroy all sins and afflictions in the same way as a metal ore placed into a fire will yield the pure metal, by merging with God, by realizing his divine form & establishing unity and oneness with Him, we can cleanse ourselves and be made pure by His Grace.
Though the soul, being itself Divine in nature, possesses that Light, it lacks luster, having been made impure by the sins and vices, which are a result of the darkness of Maya. By removing the veil of Maya, and cleansing our soul, God can enable the soul to realize its true, Divine self, and thus purify it.

9. DE-VAS-YA (देवस्य)
The word Deva means "God". However, its meaning is more complex than that. Deva, which forms the root of the words "Devata" and "Devi", means "quality" or "attribute", and can be thought of as another word for "Guna". Thus, the various forms of God are given this name, as each of those forms is related to a specific quality and function. Also, Deva is thus used to describe anyone who is considered to possess a special quality.
Since Deva is symbolic of the individual qualities of God, the word demonstrates the inherent oneness of those different Forms, and thus the use of this word can be taken as describing the fundamental unity of God. Thus we see that here, we reaffirm that central belief in the Hindu Dharma that "Ekam sat viprah bahudah vadanti" (Truth, or God, is one, but wise men call Him/It by different names).

Thus, Deva is indicative of the various multifaceted entity that is the absolute Personality of God. It describes in one word all the functions, roles and different attributes of God, and symbolizes therefore his absolutely essential nature - without God, nothing can exist.

10. DHI-MA-HI (धीमहि)
Meaning to meditate and focus our mind on God. Meditation on God implies that we remove all other thoughts from our mind, since thoughts of the world render our mind impure, and thus we are unable to conceptualize the absolute purity of God. We must be able to concentrate, and direct our mental energies towards the task in hand - which is communion with God.

DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT (धीयो यो न: प्रचोदयात्)

Prayer is carried out for four main reasons:

  • To praise and glorify God.
  • To thank God.
  • To ask forgiveness from God.
  • Or to make a request from God.

Since our soul is the Light of Life within us, and that acts on our body via the medium of the brain, we ask God to make this contact pure and righteous. The soul is of course inherently pure, being itself Divine in nature. The body is under the complete control of the mind. The link is the mind, which is affected not only by the soul, but also the outside world. We ask in these four words that God help us to improve our intellect, and guide it towards what is right.

11. DHI-YO (धीयो)
Intellect is the essence of this part of the Gayatri Mantra. Having firmly set God in our hearts, we now must try to emphasize His presence and influence on our mind and intellect.

Material prosperity holds no true meaning for the person who is truly devoted to God. Pain and suffering are of no consequence to him as, touched by God, he is imbued with God's own Divine Bliss, and all worldly sorrows pale to nothingness in comparison. However, still the individual must live in the world. Thus, it is important that the person's intellect remains focused on serving God, and that it is possible through the medium of the body, to serve God to the best of its ability.
Physical objects can be obtained very easily, if one is intelligent enough to know how to go about it. Intellect however cannot be obtained, but must be there from the very first. It is through intellect, that one is able to cultivate all other qualities (building of wealth, "success" in life (in material terms), physical fitness, etc.) Thus, intellect is the key to all else in life, and as such, it is the most important possession. We ask God in the Gayatri Mantra to gift us with the highest intellect, and to help us by showing us the way to use that intellect.

12. YO (यो)
Meaning "Who" or "That", Yo signifies yet again that it is not to anyone else that we direct these prayers, but to God alone. Only God is worthy of the highest adoration, only God is perfect and free from all defects. It is That God to Whom we offer these prayers.
13. NAH (न:)
Nah means "Ours", and signifies the selflessness of the request we make of God in this part of the Gayatri Mantra. We offer this prayer, and make the request of God, not simply for ourselves, but for the whole of humanity. We seek the uplift of the whole of society. Hindu philosophy has since the beginning recognized the concept of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" - "The whole world is one big family". Thus, we pray not only for ourselves, but for each and every member of that great family, that we may all benefit from the greatness and generosity of the All-loving God.
14. PRA-CHO-DA-YAT (प्रचोदयात्)

Prachodayat, the final word of the Gayatri Mantra, rounds off the whole mantra, and completes the request we make of God in this final part. This word is a request from God, in which we ask Him for Guidance, and Inspiration. We ask that, by showing us His Divine and Glorious Light (cf. BHARGO), He remove the darkness of Maya from our paths, that we are able to see the way, and in this manner, we ask Him to direct our energies in the right way, guiding us through the chaos of this world, to find sanctuary in the tranquility and peace of God Himself, the root of all Happiness, and the source of true Bliss.

Great Quotes on Gayatri Mantra...

“Of the many methods of yoga one of the most potent is the yoga of Gayatri mantra. Mantras have powers to endow one with remarkable abilities. The Gayatri mantra gives the devotees spiritual as well as material benefits.”
Ramana Maharshi
“The way honey is the essence of flowers, and butter of milk, in the same manner Gayatri is the essence of all the Vedas. Gayatri when realized is verily the Kamadhenu – the celestial wish-fulfilling cow. Ganga cleanses the sins of this worldly body; Gayatri purifies the soul. The worship of god bereft of Gayatri is like going out to beg food leaving the meals laid out before you. Gayatri is the greatest means of extending your spiritual powers and successful accomplishment of good ends. There is nothing greater than Gayatri for this purpose..”
Maharshi Vedavyasa
“Even divinities like Brahma pray to Gayatri because Gayatri makes possible the realization of Brahman. Gayatri removes from you the propensity to evil actions.”
Maharshi Bharadwaja
“Even fools, criminals and men with unstable minds are able to attain enlightenment by the power of Gayatri. When that is so, then the worship of Gayatri by the firm and pure minded persons will surely lead them to self knowledge and self-realisation. “
— Sage Vashishtha
“It is not possible for us to describe the greatness of Gayatri. It is not possible to act in this world beneficently without purity of mind. This purity of mind which brings in enlightenment leading to self-realisation is the result of the inspiration received from Gayatri. The avatara of Gayatri has occurred to aid us in the eradication of evil and to help increase the good.”
Jagadguru Sankaracharya
“Gayatri purifies the mind. Without the purity of mind our life is of no use. Gayatri is the producer of this purity of mind.”
Sawami Vidyanada
“Of the many invaluable treasures given to us by our rishis, Gayatri is the incomparable one. Gayatri makes mind pure and gives the light of god to the soul and that releases light innumerable souls from the world’s bondage. Gayatri makes man god-loving while freeing him from worldly wants.”
Pandit Madanmohan Malaviya

The Origin & Effects of Gayatri Mantra

Our mind, knowledge, senses, and body have a center from where they are controlled. From the root of this center, there are 24 ??? comes out which actually controls the whole body. In Gayatri mantra also, there are 24 letters. The chanting of this mantra creates air vibration, which magically affects those 24 ???. The mild vibrations created on the systematic pronunciation of this mantra can be heard from the 24 parts of the body. From those mild vibrations, ??? gets energy and they work nonstop and humans can achieve whatever he wishes. Human body contains Yogic centers, Chakras and Glands which remain inactive in general.

Gayatri mantra is formed in such a way that each letter has the capability go activating those glands. And these glands are the source of energy for the human body. Due to the activation of these glands, awakening yogic centers and chakras the sadhak (one chanting this mantra) can achieve mental and physical energies.

As per the holy Puranas, there have been only 24 Rishis in India who have the Gayatri Mantra and it's Sage Vishwamitra is the first saint of the 24 saints, & Sage Yajnavalkya the last. Sage Vishwamitra has had a profound impact on Hinduism having composed over 33 Mandalas (cantos) on the Rig Veda as he heard it directly from Brahman. This man is also the Guru of Raama and Lakshmana, and thought them how to fight

Hindu Vedic scriptures describe how these sages accumulated tremendous spiritual powers through years of deep meditation and the chanting of the Gayatri – these spiritual powers are called Siddhi. It is said that these Gayatri Sadhaka (spiritual seeker) begin to feel the presence of divine power in the inner self which induces immense strength and peace of mind. Even NASA uses the word AUM to transmit it through the universe to attract inhabitants of other planets (aliens)

These ancient sages selected the words of Gayatri mantra carefully and arranged them in such a way that they not only had good meaning but also create amazing vibrations inside the body thus enlightening the powers of righteous wisdom.

Recent research has said that the continuous chanting of this mantra stimulates the power centers located in your subtle body. Continuous enunciation of twenty four syllables of Gayatri Mantra creates a resonating effect on the threads and nerves of the human body. Pronouncing gayatri mantra creates a pressure on lips, tongue, palate, vocal cord and its connecting areas around the brain to generate the musical flow energizing the sensory energy centers.

Continuous repetition of Gayatri Mantra creates a magnetic charge to link the mind with supernatural power currents

Gayatri Mantra is the Best Divine Prayer Hymn in the World - Dr. Howard Steingeril, American Scientist.

Dr. Howard Steingeril, an American Scientist, collected Mantras, Hymns and Invocations from all over the world and from all religions, and tested their strength in his physiology laboratory. He concluded that the Hindu Vedic Gayatri Mantra is the most rewarding scientifically. That the Gayatri Mantra produced 110,000 sound waves per second. This was the highest, and found it to be the most powerful prayer hymn in the world. Can Ladies Chant Gayatri?

Since it is a prayer seeking stimulation for higher mental power, the answer is definitely "yes". There should not be any doubt about it. But to be more effective they should be first initiated to chant but fortunately or unfortunately during the post Vedic period, ladies were deprived of having upanayanams and thereby they have lost for ever the right to receive the mantra. Still it is better if they know what this mantra stands for. In the upanayanam ceremony the Mother has a very big role to play as she is preparing her son to go to gurukula to receive the formal education when she herself was the first teacher to the child after the birth.

Therefore she has every right to know what the child is going to learn. Then at least for two valid reasons the ladies are entitled to know the mantra. Firstly a married lady will sit as a partner of her husband during all the religious ceremonies except the ones associated with the funeral rites and rituals. Secondly, they as custodians of our culture can inspire the children to chant that mantra of mantras Gayatri, if they know its significance.

How to chant the Gayatri mantra...

Please listen to the clip above, this is the best way of chanting the Gayatri mantra, the effect is only possible if you pronounce it properly else it becomes effective, as this is easy for indian to chant it as Indian language have a Sanskrit base we get automatically in tune to the pitching and Pronunciation of Sanskrit, however for other nationalists, chanting this mantra will be difficult not that they could recite it which is easy though, but to get the right pitch with pronunciation will be a challenge. When a European has to Chant this Mantra it shall sound like below:

,

Now compare both and you will easily find the difference between the two, Mantra can only have a effect if it is pronounced properly and with a right pitch else it shall not work, secondly when chanting this Mantra your posture should be erect, take a deep breath and chant this devine Mantra.

Japa:  A Japa means repetitions of a particular Mantra. Each and every Mantra has a specific time and repetitions to make it effective. A Japa can be 9 or Multiples of 9 i.e. 9,18,27,36, 108  1008 max.  You can fix a particular number as a Japa and chant the Mantra every day either once or twice in the morning or evening. More the number you select the better shall be the impact. It is said that those who chant the Gayatri Mantra 100008 times will never know what suffering is.

Now in Indian we are hearing this mantra where it is not Chanted but Sung. It was made very famous by a famous singer Anuradha Paudwal. It was a good part from the singer to make this devine mantra famous, that the current generation of now who is more West Tilted has shown interest in Gayatri Mantra. However, what i want point out that Gayatri Mantra is a Mantra and not a Song, to get the max benefit you must chant it and that's the way our ancestors have gifted to us.

The Gayatri mantra used to be an important part of the Hindu initiation ceremony for young males, and has long been recited by the Brahmins (members of the highest of the four castes) as part of their daily rituals and religious practice. Brahmin male community has kept the Gayatri mantra a well-guarded secret, withheld from women and from those outside their community for ages.

It was Swami Vivekananda who began initiating non-Brahmins with the sacred thread ceremony and the Gayatri Mantra in 1898. He based this on the Bhagavad Gita’s interpretations of the Brahmin status, which was earned and not hereditary. In the later 19th century the Hindu reform movements opened the possibilities of using the Gayatri Mantra for all castes, as well as women. In the late 20th century the Gayatri Mantra spread across the masses.

So please make the best of this mantra as it has become universal, use this in your every day life, and let this Divine Mantra bring Peace and Grace to your life.

May Maa Bharati Shower her grace on you,

Jayan Divakaran.
